A week before classes started,
I drove to campus to take care of some business with the Registrar’s Office. I
parked my car in front of North Hall, where the Registrar’s Office had always been
since I have been at UU, when I saw a campus maintenance worker removing the
“Registrar’s Office” label from North Hall’s sign. This is how I found out that
UU established the new Welcome Center.
The Welcome Center is located
in Bailey Hall, and it is the new home for the Admissions, Financial Aid, and
Registrar offices. The hours of operation for the welcome center are from
8:00am to 4:30pm Monday – Friday. The front desk of the Welcome Center can be
easily seen when entering either of the main doors to Barclay/Bailey hall.
The President of Urbana
University, Dr. Lucas, wrote that the Welcome Center’s purpose is “to serve our
current students more efficiently and to attract prospective students.”
This relocation explains why a
lot of students’ class locations changed a week before the semester began. The
Welcome Center uses a room in Bailey Hall that was previously designated for
classes. But due to the fact that the Registrar’s Office moved out of North
Hall, and the Admissions and Financial Aid offices moved out of Blackmer hall, the
University was able to designate those rooms for classes.
