Have
you ever noticed the bell tones that ring across campus during the day on the
half hour? I didn’t until it was brought it to my attention, but chimes of
songs such as Hey Jude by The Beatles
can be heard playing throughout the day. Well there actually are no bells, but
there is a speaker system in the clock tower in the Jean & Lewis Moore
Center for Math & Science (MMS.) This system is operated across campus on a
computer program in the office of Dr. John Gore, Dean of Students.
According to Dr. Gore, this computer program has been in use since the end of last summer, when the previous system of an 8-track tape was replaced. The new system is a Carillon system provided by The Verdin Company. This system is on Dr. Gore’s computer, and it allows him to place the music he selects into the system, which will then be played through the speakers in the bell tower. Some of the music selected includes patriotic music, hymnals, and even some rock and roll. Make sure you are listening for some seasonal songs as the holiday season approaches!
