The men’s soccer team’s historic run in the NCAA Tournament
comes to an end with a 1-0 loss at the University of Charleston.
The men’s
soccer team, who finished the regular season 12-3-2, became the first Urbana
University sports team to qualify for an NCAA tournament in the school’s
history. The team defeated Millersville University 1-0 in the second round of
the tournament after receiving a BYE for the first round. The Blue Knights, who
had been defeated by Charleston two times in the season previously, held their
own against Charleston for most of the match. The game was dead-locked with no
score until Charleston’s Patrick Guier scored the only goal of the game for
either team with ten minutes left in the match. Urbana had a decent look at a
goal in the last minute of the game, but it could not find the back of the net,
and Charleston kicked the ball away as time expired.
Urbana was
able to finish their season one win away from tying the most wins in program
history at 14 wins, thanks to a nine-game winning streak during the regular
season. The team was able to earn eight individual conference awards at the end
of the season. Earing First Team All-MEC were: Aaron Burt, Ben Fitzpatrick, Nathan
Jones, and Raoui Lassoued. Earning
Second Team All-MEC were: Lewis Dunne and Callum Kerswell-Reid. Earning All-MEC
Honorable Mention were: Ebenezer Agyeman and Alex Zanotti.
The
University of Charleston went on to defeat LIU Post in the quarterfinals, and
have a matchup against undefeated Pfeiffer University on December 3rd
in the semi-finals of the tournament.
